Understanding the xTool F1 Ultra’s Capabilities

Engraving on curved surfaces like mugs or cups can be difficult. Typically, this requires a rotary attachment to spin the item during engraving. The xTool F1 Ultra solves this problem with its curved surface engraving feature.

This is a newer feature that adjusts the laser’s focus automatically, keeping designs clear on rounded items without extra equipment. It wasn’t in the laser’s firmware when it was initially released, so a lot of early reviews miss this feature.

How Does the Curved Surface Feature Work?

The curved surface feature uses the laser to measure the distance on points of the object’s surface, then maps that curvature to a mesh grid.  The laser will auto adjust itself as it engraves so the design doesn’t falloff around the curve.

You’ll be able to engrave on one side of a cup or mug (you can flip the mug over and engrave on the other side.) To do a full wrap around you’ll still need a rotary tool.

Step-by-Step Guide to Engraving a Mug with the F1 Ultra

1. Set up your mug in the machine.  Curved objects tend to roll, so you’ll need to stabilize it on its side.  You can use a jig if you have one available.  We just used one of the foam pieces that came with the laser and nestled the mug inside.  You could also use a container of sand or rice to keep it stationary.
2. Align the laser. Use the up and down buttons to make sure the red and blue dots overlap on the object’s surface.
3. Open a new project in xTool Creative Space (XCS) for your design
4. Choose “curved surface” instead of the default ‘flat surface’ setting
5. Walk through the steps to scan the object’s surface and set the points in your grid.
6. Make sure your design in placed correctly on the object. You can see the blue outline in the photo below shows where the design will go. For the mug, an image size of around 55mm fit best for us.
7. Choose your laser settings. For a plain white mug (with marking spray), we use these settings: Laser: Blue Diode Mode: Engrave Power: 50 Speed: 300
8. Use the Framing feature to make sure your design is correctly positioned
9. Run the job. Press start and watch as the laser carves your design.
10. Check your results, but DON’T move the mug.  If you need another pass, you can run the job again as long as you’ve not moved anything.

Engraving on other types of cups, tumblers, glasses, or bottles follow the same process. For any kind of glassware, you’ll need to use marking spray or paint (else, the laser just shines through the glass.) We use this marking spray.

Here’s a 40 oz Stanley-style tumbler and a smaller 20 oz tumbler.

You don’t need to stick to mugs and drinkware with the curved surface feature. We engraved the inside part of a wooden spoon. Mapping out the curve and mesh are the same process as we detailed above. You can see the blue lines in the image below framing up where the design will go (the laser is drawing the square too fast for the shutter speed to catch the whole square!)
